Strawberries are phenomenal on their own or macerated with a little sugar, but in honor of Strawberry Week (not an official holiday, but at Delish, we're lobbying hard to make it one), we decided to expand our horizons to the many, many glorious ways you can make the antioxidant-packed fruit taste even better.
These are the top 14—beyond melted chocolate, of course—that we've loved. They're perfect for any special occasion, or you know, just a regular old Tuesday:
A few quick notes on what you just witnessed:
- S'mores = Marshmallow Fluff + mini chocolate chips + crumbledgraham crackers
- Honey + lime juice— Bring out the berries' tropical side.
- Cannoli — You could pair broken cannoli shells or cinnamon-sugar pita chips with this recipe, but we like it just as much with fresh strawberries.
- Greek yogurt — Pro tip:A sprinkle of brown sugar offsets the yogurt's tanginess.
- Pudding— Pretty much any flavor works.
- Red Velvet — Just one of many dessert dips worth trying.
- Chocolate frosting — Warm it a little in the microwave (5-10 seconds), and the result is a fudgy, magical mess.
- Peanut butter
- Cookie butter
- Nutella
- Fudge sauce
- Whipped, melted goat cheese — Heat it in the microwave for 20 seconds and stir.
- Maple syrup— Use sparingly. Devour instantly. Add a sprinkle of black pepper if you like a little spice to your sweets.
- Milkshakes— Specifically, a Wendy's Frosty.
Once you've tried those, expand your horizons with some of these other ideas. Trust us—they don't disappoint:
Let's break things down a bit, in case some of those flavor pairings are making you give us the stink eye:
Tangy Combinations:
- Cream cheese — For those who like the tanginess of cheesecake without the added sweetness. (Who you are, exactly, we're not sure, but we support your low-sugar lifestyle.)
- Balsamic vinegar + orange juice + lime juice — Imagine the dressing on a Strawberry-Spinach Salad, now in snack form.
- Lemon curd — Why bother baking a whole cake (especially on a hot summer day), when you can just dip strawberries in it?
- Mascarpone
- Crème fraîche — You can't go wrong with strawberries and cream. Er, créme fraîche.
Tangy & Sweet:
- Cream cheese frosting
- Sour cream + brown sugar — You could even stir a pinch of cinnamon into the brown sugar first, to get more of a strawberry-cinnamon-roll flavor.
Sweet:
- Caramel sauce — Sprinkle on a little coarse sea salt afterward to truly experience love at first bite.
- Buttercream frosting — All that's missing is cake.
- Marshmallow Fluff — Not the same as Strawberry Fluff.
- Melted brie cheese — Fondue party!
- Whipped cream
- Ice cream
Chocolate:
No explanation necessary, because...chocolate.
- White chocolate
- Dark chocolate
- Milk chocolate
Of course, all of this talk about dipping strawberries brings us to the one and only time it's okay to double dip:
Double Dippers:
Dip the strawberry in chocolate (or peanut butter, caramel or Marshmallow Fluff), then in...
- Melted peanut butter — 20 seconds in the microwave should get your PB to perfectly drizzly consistency
- Toasted coconut
- Smashed cereal — Pretty much any kind works, aside from Grape Nuts (because you might crack a tooth)
- Pop rocks — White chocolate + strawberry and blue raspberry Pop Rocks = A patriotic dessert that packs its own kaboom (and earns you serious street cred with that neighbor who hosts the block's most enviable Fourth of July party).
- Crushed Oreos — Oreos make everything better, as long as you don't use the Berry ones, which were recently deemed Not Delish.
- Mini chocolate chips — What's great with chocolate? More chocolate.
- Orange zest — Why limit yourself to those chocolate oranges around Christmastime?
- Mixed nuts
Spicy:
We had to add a little sweetness to the spicy options, just to balance out the strawberry's tartness, because sour + spicy feels kind of like a punch to the jaw.
- Honey + black pepper — H/T to How Sweet It Is for introducing us to this cracklin' flavor combination
- Sriracha + vanilla frosting — Hey, it works for Jolie Patesserie's doughnuts in Harlem, and as long as you use the sriracha sparingly, it works on strawberries, too.
