Flabby upper arms are a very common cosmetic concern. People of all genders and diverse ages may experience sagging upper arms. You may have always had this inelastic skin as a trait inherited from your family. Or you may have noticed your upper arms developed excess, deflated skin after major weight loss, or as a natural result of aging. Whatever the cause, brachioplasty (an arm lift) may be the right way to achieve the more toned, defined upper arms you’ve been picturing.

Oftentimes, people turn to the option of brachioplasty after their results from exercise and weight loss have plateaued. Arm toning with weights and body lift exercises can certainly go a long way in increasing the strength and tone of your upper arms. When these exercise routines are combined with overall body fat reduction, you may get close to achieving the arm appearance you want. But the hanging upper arm skin that remains may be highly unlikely to respond to any further effort. This deflated skin may have no elasticity, so it won’t be able to shrink back and conform to the contour of the arm. An upper arm lift surgically removes this hanging skin and re-shapes the underlying tissue. So it may be a great option for you if you have hanging skin on the upper arms that is not responding to weight loss or exercise.

How Does The Procedure Work?

Dr. Chiaramonte makes an incision along the underside of the arm. Usually this incision extends from near the armpit all the way down to the elbow. The excess flap of skin is removed. Liposuction may be used to remove excess fat deposits. Then the skin on your upper arms is draped over the contour of the arm, and then sutured into place. Once you’ve fully healed and swelling has gone away, the defined arm contour will be clearly visible.
