Dr Michael Mosley recommended breakfasts that could help you lose weight (2024)

Dr Michael Mosley has shared his go-to breakfasts which can help you feel fuller for longer and curb snacking. The broadcaster, 66, is known for popularising intermittent fasting including the 5:2 diet and has also released his own book, The Fast 800.

He recommends a protein-filled first meal to start your day, with many following his weight loss advice by taking the 50:50 approach. This is where you limit carbohydrates to under 50g daily while ensuring your protein intake surpasses 50g.

Reducing your carb intake and increasing protein is said to put your body into ketosis, meaning it begins to convert your fat stores into fuel rather than using carbohydrates. According to the TV doctor, reducing the amount of carbs you eat, while increasing protein, fruit, vegetables, beans and wholegrains, are key pillars of losing weight, reports the Daily Record.

Mosley has previously highlighted two dishes to try for breakfast - one savoury and one sweet. Writing on his website, Mosley said that eating eggs in the morning can be a great start for your weight loss journey. In fact, one of his own go-to breakfasts is a mushroom omelette. He wrote: "Boiled, poached, scrambled or as an omelette - they'll keep you feeling fuller for longer compared to cereal or toast."

The doctor went on to explain that it is a great choice as eggs are high in protein, have multiple vitamins and will not increase your cholesterol if paired with something sensible. In a video for Healthista TV, he chose a mushroom omelette, with onions and spinach. The meal can be seasoned to your taste with garlic, turmeric and chili flakes.

Another option Mosley recommends is porridge and overnight oats. Taking part in an 'Ask Me Anything' forum on Mumsnet, he revealed: "The sort of things that I eat for breakfast, and which I believe are healthy, include: Porridge, with added nuts. Not the instant stuff, but rolled wholegrain oats with wheat bran. I buy supermarket own brand."

He continued: "You can also make simple overnight oats. Put half a mug of oats in a bowl, cover with milk, leave overnight in the fridge, and then eat the next morning with your favourite topping."

You can keep it varied by choosing a variety of different toppings - however Mosley recommends sticking to Mediterranean-style diet, raw, whole ingredients. These could include raw cacao powder, peanut butter and bananas, cinnamon and apples, or blueberries, lemon and Greek yoghurt. Other combinations include carrots, Greek yoghurt, honey and seeds as well as mixed fruit and nuts.

On changing our approach to breakfast and maximising your weight loss potential, Mosley wrote in the Daily Mail: "When you get up in the morning, you may be in a rush to tuck into your breakfast and get out of the door. Or you may be happy to hold off eating for a while (a lot of people find they don't get hungry until later in the day).

"One reason why you might want to delay breakfast if you're not ravenous is that, by doing so, you will be extending your overnight fast (i.e. how long it has been since your last meal)."
