Who doesn’t love sangria?! It’s colorful, it’s fresh, it’s fruity and it’s just fun to drink! But nothing is worse than drinking half a day’s worth of sugar in one beverage. For perspective… a cup of traditionalsangria has about 14 grams of sugar, which equals about 3 teaspoons of pure sugar – over half the day’s recommended value for adult women!

I love sangria but I wanted to make a fresher, lighter, lower-sugar recipe and I’m happy to report, it was delicious and also super simple to make. My easy low sugar sangria recipe includes fresh fruit, dry rose, vodka and my favorite flavored carbonated mineral water.

Grab some fresh fruit – honestly, you can use whatever you have on hand or whatever flavor profile you prefer. For this recipe, I used apple, peach, lemon, strawberries, and tangerines but you could also try raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, watermelon, kiwi, plum, cranberries, oranges – basically any fruit you love! As a note, some fruits are higher in sugar (tropical fruits + apples, pears, oranges) and some are naturally lower in sugar (berries), so the sugar content of your sangria will depend on which types of fruits you include.

For wine, I used a bottle of dry rosé, nothing too sweet. I then added about 10 drops of liquid stevia for sweetness without sugar. I also included a 1/2 cup of vodka to punch it up a little bit but you can skip any liquor -or- add 1/2 to a full cup of a liqueur, schnapps, or clear liquor. I avoided anything flavored to keep the sugar content down.

I mixed the wine, vodka and the fruit together and let it soak in the fridge for the evening to combine flavors.

Right before serving, I added three cans of Perrier flavored carbonated mineral water to add some fizz and fun to the sangria.I used a can each of lime, strawberry and peach but this is another thing you can totally customize and improvise based on the flavor profile or season. Perrier also makes pink grapefruit, l’orange, watermelon, and lemon in addition to lime, peach and strawberry and every flavor has zero calories and zero sugar. Pro Tip: freeze some pieces of apple or berries to pop in the sangria right before guests arrive – this way the sangria stays cold but doesn’t get watered down by ice cubes.
