Glutes and Hamstrings Workout: Should you train them together? (2024)

Many of us try to stick to a regular fitness programme, and in the last few years there has been an explosion of regular people looking to try and exercise more effectively, although many run into the same questions.

It can be difficult to understand just which exercises are going to help you with your own particular problem or desire, yet in the case of the glutes and hamstrings, people just don't know if you should train them together.

Their proximity to each other within the body is important, hence why people are often confused about whether they should be training the two muscles.

What are your hamstrings?

Hamstrings are a group of muscles which run along the backside of your thigh, in between your hips and knees on either side.

They are vitally important for mobility, and they work in coexistence with the glutes to rotate the hip, they play a huge role for athletes, especially those who need to run, stretch and lunge.

This is why it is important for them to be as strong as possible, otherwise they can become pulled or torn easily, especially when attempting exercise.

Can you train your hamstrings and glutes together?

The short answer is yes, it is possible, and in some cases it is recommended that you work both your hamstrings and glutes at the same time in a singular workout.

There are a number of exercises which actually train both muscle groups at the same time, these include hip thrusts and deadlifts. Furthermore, when training your hamstrings there is an aesthetic impact where your glutes appear to be more lifted, and your legs will appear more athletic.

Three of the main exercises which can workout both muscles are the barbell straight leg deadlift, barbell hip thrusts and dumbbell split squats.

The use of weights in all three cases help put manageable strain on the muscles you wish to strengthen, and in carefully constructed blocks of work, they will be strengthened by the work they've had to do in order to complete the exercise rep.
