EASY HOMEMADE SPAGHETTI RECIPE

This homemade spaghetti recipe is always something that we can agree on for dinner! Easy to make, spaghetti noodles that the kids can twirl with a fork 🙂 , and something that the entire family loves.

It’s a homemade ground beef spaghetti sauce that simmers on the stove top for maximum flavor. Add in cooked spaghetti noodles and mix it all together.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE SPAGHETTI FOR DINNER

Cook and crumble ground beef, salt, and pepper in a skillet pan over medium-high heat. Once there is no pink remaining drain the grease (if needed).

Add in a can of tomato sauce, tomato paste, beef broth, garlic, sugar, and Italian seasoning. Let simmer on LOW for 45 minutes. The sauce will thicken and become a deep dark red color while simmering. That’s what you want.

Add in cooked pasta noodles and stir everything together. Serve with parmesan cheese if wanted.

DO I NEED TO SALT PASTA WATER?

YES! YES! Salt your pasta water. Otherwise you will end up with bland, tasteless pasta noodles. I add about 1 teaspoon salt to the boiling water.

MY TIPS FOR THIS SPAGHETTI RECIPE

– I tested this recipe (and make it) using full-salt regular beef broth. Feel free to use the 50% reduced-sodium beef broth if you prefer that. You may want to add some additional salt but just taste and see.

– You can use ground turkey in place of the ground beef for a healthier spaghetti dish.

– The tomato sauce w/ garlic, oregano, basil is very common in any grocery store. It will be by the other tomato sauces. Same with the tomato paste, be sure and get the tomato paste with Italian herbs.

– Use any pasta you want! My kids love classic spaghetti with the thin spaghetti noodles or angel hair noodles. You can also cook the entire 16 ounce box of pasta or just use 3/4 the package (about 12 ounces). We prefer all the noodles so I cook up the entire box of pasta noodles. I also break the noodles in half before adding them to the boiling water. This makes the noodles easier to eat for little kids especially.

Homemade Spaghetti Recipe

Prep Time 15 minutes minutes

Cook Time 45 minutes minutes

This easy Homemade Spaghetti Sauce Recipe with a homemade ground beef spaghetti sauce and spaghetti noodles. Delicious, kid-friendly dinner recipe that is a tried & true favorite.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • 1 can (14.75 oz) beef broth (I use full-salt beef broth for this recipe)
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce w/ garlic, oregano, basil
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste w/ italian herbs
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
  • 1 box (16 oz) thin spaghetti noodles

Instructions

  • Cook and crumble ground beef, salt, and pepper in a large skillet pan (with high sides on it), over medium-high heat, until no longer pink. Drain.

  • Add beef broth, tomato sauce, tomato paste, garlic, sugar, and Italian seasoning. Stir together until mixed well. Bring to a boil. Once boiling reduce heat to LOW and let simmer for 45 minutes.

    * The sauce will thicken lots & turn a deep dark red color while simmering.

  • About 10-15 minutes before the spaghetti sauce is done cook pasta noodles according to package directions. Drain in a colander but do not rinse the noodles.

Add the cooked noodles into the spaghetti sauce and mix everything together until all noodles are coated in the sauce. Serve with parmesan cheese if wanted.

Notes

You can mince & press fresh garlic cloves, use chopped garlic from a jar, or use the garlic paste from the tube. Either one will work just fine. If wanted, you could also use 1 teaspoon of dried garlic powder.

This recipe has been tested several times only using the tomato sauce w/ garlic, oregano, basil and the tomato paste w/ italian herbs. If you use regular tomato sauce and tomato paste the flavor will be muted, so you may have to add some additional seasonings (like dried basil, dried oregano).

We like the entire 16 oz box of thin spaghetti noodles in this recipe but feel free to use less if you prefer not as much pasta. Anywhere from 12-16 ounces of pasta will be just fine in this recipe.

FAQs

What is the secret to good spaghetti? ›

For the best spaghetti, cook it in salted water.

Pasta water should taste salty. I add a lot of salt to our pasta water (it makes the pasta taste delicious). I add about one tablespoon of salt for every four quarts (16 cups) of water, which is perfect for cooking one pound of pasta.

How do you make homemade spaghetti taste better? ›

To enhance the flavor of your spaghetti sauce, you can add fresh vegetables, greens, and fresh herbs like basil and parsley. You can also add diced onions, fresh garlic, and red/green pepper. A splash of red wine or some dairy, such as cheese, also works great. Lastly, don't forget salt.

Does homemade spaghetti sauce need sugar? ›

The reason for sprinkling a pinch of sugar into a simmering saucepan of tomatoes is simple: sugar cuts the acidity of the tomatoes and creates an overall more balanced sauce. The exact acid levels in tomatoes can vary quite a bit depending on whether they're fresh or canned, the tomato variety, and the time of year.

How to season meat for spaghetti? ›

Season ground beef with salt and pepper. In a large skillet, add the beef and chopped onion and brown. Drain excess grease. Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, parsley, garlic powder, crushed red pepper, worcestershire, and sugar to the skillet.

What to add to jar spaghetti sauce to make it taste homemade? ›

Add fresh herbs (basil, oregano, rosemary, bay leaf), and let them simmer to give a punch of fresh flavor.

What brings out spaghetti flavor? ›

Red pepper flakes, dehydrated or fresh garlic, dried oregano, parsley, or basil, or an Italian seasoning blend are all good options. Dried herbs and spices should be added at the beginning of the cook time so that they have time to bloom.

What adds richness to spaghetti sauce? ›

Use wine.

Red wine gives the sauce added richness and robustness, while white wine imparts a fruity flavor. Incorporate the wine early in the cooking process, just after the vegetables have softened. Then, let the wine cook down and reduce almost all the way.

Do Italians put sugar in spaghetti sauce? ›

It is widely held that Italian immigrants began adding sugar to their sauce to make up for the overly acidic tomatoes they were forced to work with in their new home. But the history of sugar in pasta sauce actually goes back to Italy itself.

Why put brown sugar in spaghetti sauce? ›

Don't skip the brown sugar.

Adding a bit of sugar to your homemade spaghetti sauce helps to cut the natural acidity of the tomatoes and helps to balance the sauce. For an extra kick, add a sprinkling of red pepper flakes to your sauce. Only add this if you like some spice, though!

Should I put honey in my spaghetti sauce? ›

Tomato sauce is a favourite with adults and children and can be made from store cupboard ingredient, cooked in advance or even stored in the freezer. The secret to making it taste extra good is adding a touch of raw honey.

Do you cook the meat before putting it in spaghetti sauce? ›

Combine ground beef, onion, garlic, and green pepper in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Cook and stir until meat is browned and crumbly and vegetables are tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain grease. Stir diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste into the pan.

What meat is better for spaghetti? ›

One of the finest cuts of beef to be served with pasta is chopped filet mignon. The tenderness of the steak paired with the flavor of the sauce creates an unforgettable pasta dish. Ground beef is often used to create the traditional spaghetti and meatballs we all know and love.

How do you make meat sauce stick to spaghetti? ›

Once the pasta is in the sauce, add pasta water. This is the most vital step in the process. Starchy pasta water doesn't just help thin the sauce to the right consistency; it also helps it cling to the pasta better and emulsify with the fat and cheese you're going to be adding.

What gives spaghetti sauce depth of flavor? ›

Briny ingredients like olives or capers are another way to brighten up your pasta sauce while also introducing texture and depth of flavor. Roughly chop a handful and stir them into your sauce while it's heating up on the stove.
