I have a very old bottle from Paula Deens House Seasoning that I purchased many years ago before she got as famous as she is now (the bottle has a picture of her face on it, and was distributed by Quality Food Brands inc, Monroe Michigan ). I used it all up, but I kept the bottle. The ingredients listed in order are: "sea salt, granulated garlic, black pepper, granulated onion, ground cumin, and other spices". I have used the recipe listed on this site and included equal amounts of garlic powder and onion powder. In my experience the cumin should be limited to just a big table spoon full or it will dominate the seasoning too much. This is very close to the taste of what I remember from the commercial spice mix.

I ended up making FOUR TIMES the amount of this recipe just now. Thank goodness I like it! I think I'll be giving some of this away this weekend. A note to self and other chefs: pay close attention to what you are doing while making things like this. I ended up adding the garlic I measured out into my container of pepper rather than the container I was using to store this recipe. UGH! I used the Penzey's Flaked Kosher Salt but only had McCormick Pepper and Garlic Powder. I can't wait to try it with all Penzey's spices!

This is a pretty common mix. Paula was smart enough to market it but also gives the recipe away and I admire her for that. Between this and my hickory salt, I'm good to go with almost any recipe.

I have loved using this mix for years, it has great flavor. I have added onion powder to it (like a scant 1/4 cup) because my famly likes the flavor of onions.

I have been making this mix for at least 10 years. However, it was too salty so I reduced the salt by 1/2 and added onion powder. Works great on everything including popcorn.

I live in Western New York, on Lake Ontario. Great cultural, food, and touring area. For fun, we go "wandering" to the Finger Lakes area for lunch and "junk hunts".I retired after 15 years as a travel agent, but I'm very busy with family and friends.Favorite cookbook: 'American Century' by Jean Anderson. Great reference book! I love to read cookbooks, and can't pass up a chance to get "just one more".I now work part time for the Canadian American Transportation System, also known as the "Fast Ferry", or "The Breeze" that goes between Rochester NY and Toronto. It's a gorgeous ship, and a cool job!
