Pixels & Ink Podcast: Episode 4313 - An Exciting Night for Gaming

The Pixels and Ink gang gathered around the virtual campfire this week to discuss the highlights and snubs of this year's Game Awards. They agreed that this year's line-up was solid, with many titles well worth playing. Touching on what made last year's winner Elden Ring such a dark horse entry, they delve into all the titles on this year's shortlist, including Resident Evil 4 Remake, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Balder's Gate 3, Alan Wake 2, Super Mario Bros. Wonder and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. While it's hard to say who will walk away with this year's big prize, the crew dives into the arguments for each option and why they're worth your time. From everyone thinking that Resident Evil 4 Remake was an odd inclusion to the fact that Balder's Gate 3 has a strong case to walk away with some major accolades, this is shaping up to be an exciting night in gaming. As if that were not enough, Jordan and Brendan delve into the sad state of the Silent Hill franchise and the hopes that Silent Hill 2 Remake can revive the legendary horror franchise.

The two talk more about Sonic the Hedgehog—their favorite games and the longevity of the franchise. They take a second at the end to talk about Call of Duty's "80's Action Hero" event and how the inclusion of John Rambo in a game like Call of Duty kind of undercuts the theme of that movie. To close off the podcast, Jordan goes on a long rant about Biomutant—the new action RPG published by THQ Nordic. In this week's Pixels & Ink Podcast: It's a solo-cast as Jordan talks about the ridiculous situation that unfolded in Wisconsin involving a group assault, and a pulled firearm over some Pokémon cards—which subsequently caused Target to suspend the sale of most trading cards in store. Jordan wonders about the nature of fandoms, and the rapid toxicity of certain groups, while reminiscing on encounters of his youth where certain collectables were involved. Afterwards, Jordan talks about the E3 2021 digital portal and what a successful launch could mean for the future of E3—whether a purely digital format could be the new norm, how it could be beneficial to the press, or if perhaps we might see a reinvented conference that is open to the public but still accessible to journalists. To close off the news, Jordan talks about the reveal trailer for Venom: Let there be Carnage and how much of a delightful trash-fire the film will most likely be. Jordan has some issues with the portrayal of the symbiote, and isn't particularly fond of Vemon in general. In a bit of game discussion, Jordan got a hands-on with the open-beta for Amazon Games' upcoming MMO: New World. He talks a little about his experience with it, and and some of the more interesting features of the game. Apple lawsuit—no matter who wins, we lose. Afterwards, Jordan, Alex, Chris, and Dayna talk about Nintendo's surprise announcement of Game Maker Garage—a seemingly full game evolution on the Nintendo Labo Garage, where players are encouraged to learn basic coding and make their own games. They discuss the games potential appeal, and possible staying power, given the untimely fate of the Nintendo Labo. To cap off the news, the gang discusses Marvel's release slate of upcoming movies, but their focus is on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever—what it could be about, and how it could continue without Chadwick Boseman. To end the Podcast, Jordan, Alex, and Chris talk about New Pokemon Snap—what they like, and how it's different from the original Pokemon Snap. Afterwards, the tone turns morose as the P&I crew has to discuss the tragic loss of one of videogames' most iconic characters: Super Mario. As March 31st, 2021 marked the "Day Mario Died," the gang talks a little about how incredibly stupid the whole online hyperbole was.
