Many people are surprised at how quickly custom whitening trays enhance their teeth. It will take much longer to get your teeth to the shade you desire. While custom trays may be more expensive than others, their benefits are well worth the investment.

As a general rule, a person with average stained teeth and no natural sensitivity will see results in 7-14 applications. For those with sensitivity (who require shorter whitening sessions), it may take more than 14 applications.

Each time you whiten, you are removing years of staining. Although results are not permanent, it's very easy to maintain a white smile for life! After your initial treatments to remove old stains, most people only need touchups 4-6 times per year to maintain their ideal results.

Your dentist will make impressions of your teeth to create molds that make your whitening trays. Once you have trays, a bleaching solution is placed within them as you wear them for up to 4 hours/day for 1-2 weeks. You'll notice a significant improvement in the whiteness of your teeth within that time.

One of the most common side effects is tooth sensitivity, which can occur during or after treatment. Overuse or misuse of teeth whitening products can also lead to enamel damage, gum irritation, and discoloration. Additionally, some types of tooth discoloration may not respond well to teeth whitening treatments.

For in-office teeth whitening, it costs about $400-$700. The take-home tray is about $300-$500 and under $100 for over-the-counter whitening.

After Whitening: Remove the tray and rinse off your teeth.

Brush any remaining gel away. Brush, floss and continue routine dental cleaning. You may initially notice white splotches on teeth following removal of tray. This is typically cause by dehydration of the teeth and should diminish within an hour.

Should I brush my teeth before using whitening trays? ›

Brushing Before Whitening

Brushing away any surface dirt, plaque, or food particles allows the whitening gel to make direct contact with your teeth, perhaps resulting in more effective results. Clean teeth may also absorb the whitening solution more evenly, resulting in a more uniform whitening result.

Rinse your mouth with lots of lukewarm water to remove any remaining gel when the trays are removed. Wash the tray with cold water and dry thoroughly with tissues before storage. Sensitivity is a normal feature of the whitening process. It usually only lasts for a few days after the duration of the whitening period.

If you wear your custom made trays for at least 3-4 hours in the day and/or wear the trays overnight for 14 consecutive days you will get the fastest results.

Conduct your whitening session once per day until desired level of whitening is attained. NOTE – You may skip days between whitening sessions to minimize sensitivities. This will not affect the cumulative whitening process. Remove the tray and rinse off your teeth.

We advise whitening your teeth just once a year, whether professionally or at home. This should keep sensitivity from becoming a problem while helping you maintain a white, natural-looking smile. Typically, the professional-grade whitening kits available from our dental office last about a year.

While the best results are typically achieved by wearing the trays for consecutive days, this is not neces- sary to achieve the smile you desire. Wearing them every other day or even once a week can give great results! Once you have achieved the white smile you desire, stop wearing the trays.

Leads to great results

While at-home whitening kits do not whiten teeth as fast as professional whitening treatments, most patients will achieve their desired shade of white in as little as two to three weeks. Over-the-counter teeth whitening products can take up to six weeks before producing any noticeable results.

Trays provide more coverage than some teeth whitening strips. May contain a higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide and other chemicals for near-immediate results. Permanently remove light and tough stains. Many kits come with enough gel for multiple, separate treatments, which saves on costs.

The answer depends on your goals and budget. Professional teeth whitening is probably your best bet if you're looking for fast, dramatic results. If you're working with a tight budget or are simply interested in trying out a teeth whitening method, then an at-home kit may be a better option.
