Despite that I only buy a small bunch of bananas at a time, I still don't always use them all by the time they get "too ripe" to eat. So this morning I made a loaf of oatmeal chocolate chip banana bread. It's a great way to use up near death (ha) bananas and it's so delicious. I like to add walnuts to my oatmeal banana bread but I know not everyone is a fan, so feel free to omit them.
This bread freezes well too, you can slice it before hand and just pull a slice out of oatmeal chocolate chip banana bread when you want it. MMMM. I'll be honest though, you might want to make two loaves if you plan to freeze any!
Sure, banana bread is fine by itself but banana bread with chocolate chips? Or better yet banana bread with walnuts AND chocolate chips? Total yum!
Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
1 ¼ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup packed brown sugar
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon cinnamon
3 teaspoon canola oil
3 large eggs, beaten
3 large bananas, ripe and mashed
1 cup uncooked old fashioned oats
½-3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Easy directions for oatmeal chocolate chip banana bread
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a loaf pan and set aside.
Now, I use a (affiliate)KitchenAid Stand Mixer, but you can do this by hand too. Combine your bananas, eggs and oil in your mixing bowl.
In a large bowl, stir together dry ingredients (except the walnuts and chocolate chips). Slowly add the dry mixture to your wet mixture.
Once combined add the walnuts and chocolate chips. Mix until just blended then pour into your prepared pan.
Bake for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool for about 5 minutes before removing from the pan. Then, let your oatmeal chocolate chip banana bread sit on cooling rack for another 10 minutes before slicing.

My 4 year old & I just finished baking this bread-- delicious! We used whole wheat flour & added in some peanut butter chips too, to make it heartier. Now I can justify eating several slices & calling it breakfast! ???? Thanks for the great, easy recipe!Reply
Danielle
Does using all whole wheat flour change anything? I am making this today and would love to use whole wheat flour instead of white!

I haven't tried it with whole wheat flour, so I'm not entirely sure. You'll have to let us know!

Tried this recipe yesterday and it came out so great! The bread disappeared in 2 hours! Next time though I would put 1/2 or 3/4 cup chocolate chips instead I think 1 cup was a little too much.
Great recipe!Reply

Thanks, my kids like it super chocolately, but recently I've made it with less and it does make it less "gooey" I've updated the recipe. 🙂

The oats give help give the bread a light, sponge yet strong texture as well as adding an extra layer of nutty flavor as well as pleasant texture. This is my favorite banana bread recipe and I’ve made it twice in mini loaf pans (bake time 25-30 minutes).Reply

I have not tested this in the bread maker, since it's a quick bread. That's a good question though, I'll have to test it!

I am wondering if it is 3 teaspoons oil or 3 tablespoons?
Reply
Kerri Jablonski
Hi Diana, tsp is teaspoons, so for this recipe you'd use 3 teaspoons of oil. Enjoy your banana bread!

My kids are weird about texture. So, even though my husband and I loved it, the boys weren’t crazy about the whole oats in the bread. So, I decided to grind up the oats in the food processor and turn it into a flour. I used the same measurements that the recipe calls for but with oat flour instead of regular oats. And it’s still soooooo good. And the kids can’t get enough of it!Reply
