Analysis: How a large tree may have shielded shooter from view

A "fundamental security failure" allowed a gunman to get close enough to Donald Trump to shoot him, according to an analysis of the scene of the assassination attempt.

Sky News analysis of the area wherethe former presidentwas shot from as he gave a speech to supporters in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, suggests a large tree blocked the view between the gunman and the closest armed protection unit.

Two armed units could be seen on the two warehouses behind Mr Trump, but because of the tree only the unit that was further away from the shooter had a clear view of him.

Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was on top of a warehouse between 130-140m from Mr Trump when he fired several rounds at the former president before being shot and killed by Secret Service agents.

Secret Service says no changes to Republican event's security plans

The US Secret Service says it hasn't changed its security plans ahead of the Republican National Convention (RNC) tomorrow despite the assassination attempt on Trump.

In a briefing this evening a Secret Service spokesperson said they were "confident" in their plans and "fully prepared".

They also said there were no known threats against the RNC or anyone attending.

The comments come hours after Joe Biden said he'd directed the head of the Secret Service to review all security measures ahead of the four-day event in Milwaukee.

Trump is going to be at the convention, where Republicans will formally nominate him as their candidate for the presidential election on 5 November.

Timeline of assassination attempts on US presidents

Since the nation's founding, four presidents have been killed and several others targeted, as were candidates.

FBI update: Attack being treated as potential domestic terrorism

FBI officials gave reporters an update just now, in which they said they were investigating the shooting a potential domestic terrorism act as well as an assassination attempt.

They also said the shooter acted alone and there are no ongoing public safety concerns.

They confirmed the gun used to carry out the attack was an AR-style 556 rifle that they believe was purchased by the gunman's father.

Agents will ask the gunman's family members how he gained access to the weapon, they said, adding they hadn't yet established if it was taken without his father's knowledge.

Investigators have not found any indications the suspect had a history of mental health issues, they said, and are still working on discovering his motives.

They've received well over 2,000 tips from the public.

They also noted violent political rhetoric is 'ticking up' after the attempted assassination.
