All electric devices run on certain wattage, but we pay for electricity by kilowatt-hours (kWh). That’s we need to convert watts to kilowatt-hours in order to figure out the electricity cost. To help you with this, we have created a Watts To kWh Calculator and a chart for 10 watts to 10000 watts devices.

Example: Let’s say we run a 1000 watt device for 8 hours. How many kWh of electricity does this device use? Simple. Such a device will spend 1000 watt × 8 hours / 1000 = 8 kWh of electricity.

Let’s first look at the units we are converting:

  • Watts are a unit of electric power. Example: A device that draws 10 amps on 120V circuit is powered by 1200 watts.
  • Kilowatt-hours (abbreviation kWh) are a unit of electric energy. Electric energy (kWh) is not equal to electric power (watts). Rather, electric energy is calculated as electric power (watts) sustained for a certain amount of time (hours). 1 kWh is equal to 1000 Wh (watt-hours).

Namely, a unit will spend 1 kilowatt-hour of electric energy if:

  • 1000 watt unit runs for 1 hour.
  • 500 watt unit runs for 2 hours.
  • 250 watt unit runs for 4 hours.
  • 1 watt unit runs for 1000 hours.

Here is the formula that converts watts to kWh:

Kilowatt-hours (kWh) = Watts × Times (Hours) / 1000

Kilowatt-hours are calculated by multiplying watts by hours of use. We also have to divide the total by 1000 since 1 kilowatt (1 kW) is equal to 1000 watts (1000 W).

How many watts is a kilowatt hour

We can use this equation to create a simple calculator that converts watts to kWh:

Watts To kWh Calculator

In this calculator, we just insert the wattage of our device and the number of hours we run this device. The calculator will automatically convert watts to kilowatt-hours:

Let’s look at an example of how this calculator works. We have a 2000 watt device and want to run it for 6 hours. Slide the 1st slider to ‘2000’ and the 2nd slider to ‘6’.

We get this result: Running a 2000 watt device for 6 hours will consume 12.00 kWh of electricity.

This is just one example. Let’s have a look at how many kWh will running 10 watts to 10000 watts devices use if we run them for 1 hour, 4 hours, 8 hours, and 24 hours:
