The list made by Oxford University-based OurWorldInData compiled figures on calorie consumption by country from the United Nations.

Bahrain ranked first with more than 4,000 calories per day on average. The US was second, with an average of 3,868 calories per day.

The three countries in the top five included Ireland (3,850 calories), Belgium (3,824) and Turkey (3,762).

The Central African Republic had the lowest calorie consumption in the world (1,641 per person per day), followed by Burundi (1,696), Madagascar (1,770), Zimbabwe (1,853) and Yemen (1,957).

According to the research, 173 out of 184 countries and territories surveyed consume more than 2,000 calories per person per day.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that people should consume about 2,000 calories per day on average.

According to experts, over-consumption is driving up obesity and fueling associated health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease, and even Alzheimer's.
