What Vegetables & Fruits Should Not Be Juiced? (1)

When juicing, there are staple vegetables I return to again and again: carrots, cucumbers, leafy greens, apples, beets, and sweet potatoes. When it’s time to add a bit more variety, I find myself reaching for anything I can find in the fridge. But that got me thinking, are there any fruits and vegetables that I shouldn’t be juicing? Some produce can’t be juiced simply because you won’t be able to extract juice from it very well, such as berries and bananas. But I was most interested in potential negative side effects from juicing certain vegetables. We’ll cover a list of both the vegetables that should not be juiced for health reasons and those that simply don’t produce much juice. A lot of the answers I found surprised me!

Save These Fruits & Vegetables for Smoothies

  • Rhubarb
  • Figs
  • Eggplant
  • Bananas
  • Berries

Difficult To Juice But You Can Try (If You Must)

  • Mangos
  • Avocado
  • Winter Squash
  • Papaya
  • Peaches

Add These to Your Compost Bin or Trash Can:

  • Citrus rinds
  • Pits, including those from avocados, peaches, etc.
  • Apple seeds
  • Papaya peels
  • Carrot greens

Spinach contains oxalates and raw kale contains goitrogens. Oxalates are also found in bananas, mangoes, cauliflower, and more. Goitrogens are found in raw cruciferous vegetables and can affect thyroid function in large amounts. Keyword: large amounts. Before you swear off spinach or kale, know that normal serving sizes of spinach and kale are not going to cause problems. It’s only when ingesting large amounts that you will run into issues (exceptions to this statement are listed in the section below). Plant-based vegans need to be more aware of oxalates and goitrogens, since they are more likely to consume large amounts of fruits and vegetables that contain them.

The moral of the story is that variety is your friend. Most of the issues associated with juicing too much of any vegetable only occurs when you’re drinking or eating significant amounts of that vegetable each and every day.If you make it a point to include variety in your meals and juices, it’s highly unlikely you’ll have any health issues with juicing vegetables or fruits.

You have Thyroid problems:

Avoid large amounts of raw cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage, broccoli, and kale. Large amounts can disrupt the thyroid gland. Those with thyroid issues should consult with their doctor and be more aware when consuming raw cruciferous vegetables.

You experience stomach bloating:

If you find yourself bloating after drinking juices, consider reducing the amount of cruciferous vegetables, such as kale or bok choy. Though these vegetables are wonderful for health, they may cause bloating for some people when raw. If this is you, lightly steaming these vegetables may be a better way to receive their nutritional value.

You have or have had kidney stones:

Oxalates, which are found in bananas, cherries, mangoes, raw spinach, chard, and more, can worsen or create kidney stones when eaten in large amounts. They can also block iron and calcium absorption, again, when eaten in large amounts. For most people, oxalates will never be an issue. However, it’s always good to bring awareness to what you’re eating and juicing to ensure you receive a variety of nutrients.

You’re managing blood sugar:

Increase your vegetables to fruit ratio and avoid fruits such as pineapple, mango, pears, and other fruits that are particularly high in sugar. It’s also recommended you discuss juicing with your doctor first.

There are no known edible vegetables or fruits that cannot be juiced together. In fact, “when apple mash is mixed with other vegetables,” the resulting juicehas increased nutrients and minerals.

Yes! And it is a wonderful practice. However, learn which leafy greens work best with your body and shuffle through them. I mostly use kale in my daily drink, switching it out for spinach once or twice a week. However, you can use bok choy, chard, wheatgrass, and more. The only thing to remember is that greens containing oxalates (spinach, chard) should be used less often.

  • Cucumbers
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Celery
  • Apples
  • Carrots
  • Beets
  • Wheatgrass
  • Spinach (one or twice a week)
  • Romaine lettuce
  • Ginger
  • Parsley & Cilantro
  • Turmeric
  • Fennel
  • Lime or Lemon

And the list could go on! There are far more vegetables and fruits that you can juice than ones that you can’t. Putting some attention on getting a variety of fruits and vegetables will ensure you get nutritional variety and stay out of a juicing rut. Of course, we are not doctors and this has not been evaluated by one; if needed, find the proper professional to ensure your juicing routine is healthful for you. And as always, feel free to call or email us; we’d love to connect with you.

Hi. Eating fruit with the skin on helps your body to absorb sugars slowly because of the fibre. Juicing takes away the fibre and you just end up with a sugar rush. I add a level tablepoon of flax seeds to my fruit smoothies as a bit of fibre to compensate for the lack of skin.

Mockmill 100 Stone Grain Mill

Mockmill 100

I am completely satisfied with my Mockmill 100. It feels substantial, processes grain quickly, and is fairly quiet. I was very satisfied with the customer service I received from Extreme Wellness. I knew the mill was backordered when I put in my order. I was kept updated on the status weekly. They even answered a question I had over the weekend. I would definitely order from them again.

Diamant Cast-Iron Manual Grain Mill

Mitchell R. (Kerrville, US)

Very difficult item to obtain

Diamant grain mill was by far the most difficult item to actually get that I’ve ever ordered. Over a year from my initial purchase. Originally ordered Christmas Day 2021. After five month I decided to give up and order a mill from the US that didn’t have the supply chain issues. Several months past before my “ wants” got the best of me. I knew I liked the look and durability of Diamant. I reordered in August. This time Extreme Wellness sent out updates on arrival dates. I received this beautiful mill around the first week of February. The mill arrived with a few chips in the enamel paint. I reported this to Extreme Wellness. I received an email immediately wishing to resolve the issue. They checked the manufacture in Europe to find out they are going to send touch up paint. I am very happy with this purchase as it not only will be the most durable piece of kitchen equipment I’ve purchased but also the most beautiful. Presently I am building a table to permanently mount it to for use and display. Thanks Extreme Wellness for being diligent with the manufacture and patient with me when I would call for a status update.

Great product

The grain mill is awesome. Very quiet. It took a few months to get but I can't blame the company for the backlog for the product. It wasn't available anywhere. Plus I got a coupon for using extreme wellness supply. If you are curious about the size, it's smaller than my vitamix. Check out the photo for a comparison.

Angel Juicer 7500 Twin Gear Stainless Steel Juicer (Super Angel Pro)

Lightbay (Fremont, US)

Best Juicer

I recently purchased a Super Angel Pro Juicer model 7500. I am juicing about 10-12 quart of juice every week. I used all sorts of green leaf vegetable (Kale, Chard, Collard green, Mustard Green, Spinach, Fennel, Boc Choy, Coriander and Parsley), Green Apple, carrots, Lemon, Ginger, fresh turmeric etc. Before that I used a centrifugal juicer. I thought Angel will be slower. To my surprise Angel was much quicker and saved me about a third of time. My juice yield is also about 15-20% higher. I did use a cloth to manually squeeze more juice from pulp when I was using centrifugal juicer. With Angel juice also tastes much better. So far I am super happy with this juicer. It is much easy to clean compared to my centrifugal juicer. I hope it continues to work this way.
Apr 14, 2024 update - I have been using this juicer for 2.5 years now. I make about 10-quart mixed vegetable juice every about 10 days. It does take about 4 hours, but juice comes out very good. I had no issues with the juicer except it does get heated up sometimes and requires a short break. There are some small deposits on the perforated sieve and gears. Some of the leafy vegetable produce lots of foam which I solve by adding some of the fibrous waste back in the hopper to absorb the foam. Also, some soft fruits, like green apple or lemons cause a similar issue requiring adding fiber back to help gears pushout the things.

Omega VSJ843QS Vertical Slow Speed Masticating Juicer

Debra (Carson City, US)

Love it!

I've been using a Champion as well as a manual "healthy juicer" for greens for many years. After seeing a you-tube video on the VSJ843 I decided to buy one. I just love it! It does a very good job of juicing hard veges, fruit and greens. The juicing session is a lot faster using the VSJ843 compared to using and cleaning two machines. It's quiet, has a small footprint and looks good on my counter. It's not messy to use and clean up is a breeze. You do need to chop up your produce into small pieces to get the best results. Oh, and customer service from Extreme Wellness is outstanding.

*Edit - I have been using weekly for over four years. Great high volume juicer. This is built to last
